Before creating a website, it is important to take the time to research the different types that exist to determine which one suits your needs.
Let’s start by clarifying some aspects that will allow us to have a better understanding of the subject. Sometimes the words “site” and “page” are used as synonyms, and that’s not completely wrong, but keep in mind that a site is a collection of web pages.
Now, basically a site is a digital structure that houses information in the form of text, images and videos to be displayed on the Internet through a name and address, the content and the way it is displayed defines its type.
Looking at it in another way, there are around 1.7 million web pages that allow you to do different activities of daily life in their digital version, from reading a newspaper to making bank transactions. And each of them has a very different combination of elements depending on its objective.
Types of websites
Without any order of importance, let’s see some types of sites that we can find in the immense ocean of the “network of networks”, according to their functionality:
Corporate or institutional
These sites are an informative window to the nature of the company or institution. It is common to see in them a menu of options where you can find the organizational culture, news and some reference to their products or services. In this category we find the pages of large organizations such as car companies or universities, just to name a few examples.
They can be a site in itself or be included in another one. They are practically like magazines that show articles or posts on a specific topic, just like the one you are reading now. Blogs are great for sharing information of any kind, it can be personal or specialized content. Even more interesting, there is the possibility of allowing readers to comment.
The portals work as private spaces, in other words, not all the public can access them, but it is done through credentials such as username and password, after having registered personal information. They are usually used to display exclusive content for subscribers or to carry out administrative procedures.
They are also known as e-commerce, online stores or virtual stores, and they are made to sell. They include a product catalog with their respective photographs, characteristics and prices; as well as the payment and shipping methods. Amazon is a great example.
They show the diversity of products or services that a person or company offers. It could also be said that they act as a presentation of the activities carried out, clearly detailing the commercial line with which they try to cover a demand in the market.
The reality is that there are many other types of websites, but we wanted to show you the most common ones. The most important thing of all is that you define very well what’s the purpose of your personal or commercial brand, what use does it have, what is your niche and what can make it special so that users want to visit it and come back.
And as a final recommendation, go through the categories of templates offered by the web design platforms that best suit your objective and you will surely find the right structure for you. It is also worth looking at existing webpages of your competition to give you an idea of how to shape yours. But yes, it is not about copying but about improving (in a very original way). Let’s do it!
